Gold Award

The Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard Credit Card is a rewards credit card that is a touch of everything including Airpoints, a relatively low interest rate of 16.95% and a balance transfer offer of 5.95% for life of balance transferred. The Airpoints earn rate is a bit complicated with two tiers of earn rates which seems to penalise you for spending more on your card. The annual fee is a bit hefty but might be worth it considering all the benefits you get. Although the Airpoints earn rate is decent it is less than what you get with the Amex Airpoints Platinum card. We encourage you to compare all the Airpoints credit cards on our site before you make your decision.

The Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard Credit Card benefits include:

  • Earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $95 spent on your card up to (and including) $15,000 then 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $190 spent on your card each month
  • Earn one Status Point for every $225 you spend on your card on eligible purchases
  • Two complimentary Valet Parking eVouchers each year
  • Priority Pass lounge access to over 1,500 airport lounges around the world
  • Koru membership joining fee waived, plus get a $145 discount off a 12-month individual membership
  • Up to 120 days of overseas travel insurance per round trip
  • Extended Warranty Insurance of up to 12 months for goods purchased on your Airpoints World Mastercard, plus 90 days Purchase Protection that could cover loss, theft or accidental damage
  • 200 Airpoints™ Dollars Advance available to you if you’re a little short on what you need for a reward
The American Express Airpoints Platinum Card
The Amex Airpoints Platinum Card is the FASTEST Air NZ Airpoints DollarTM earning Platinum credit card. Every $70 spend earns you 1 Airpoints Dollar. Every $70 spend earns you 1 Airpoints Dollar. This card also includes complimentary Travel Insurance, VIP Lounge access and more. Rewards Points Cash Equivalent

Up to $15,000 spend:

$100 spend earns you $1.05 cash-equivalent^.

Over $15,000 spend:

$100 spend earns you $0.52 cash-equivalent^.

^ To help you compare reward points across different credit cards and rewards programs, we provide an estimate of the cash-equivalent of the reward points that you will get back for every $100 you spend on eligible purchases with your card. The cash equivalent value given is an estimate only based on a specific redemption example. In some cases reward points cannot be redeemed for cash directly. See below to find out how the estimate was calculated.

Points Cash Equivalence Calculation

If 1 Airpoints Dollar equals $1 NZD when redeemed with Air New Zealand or through the Airpoints store and every $95 spend (for up to $15,000 spend) earns you 1 Airpoints Dollar then $100 spend earns you (100/95) = $1.05 Airpoints Dollars or $1.05 cash-equivalent. Similarly, if every $190 spend (for above $15,000 spend) earns you 1 Airpoints Dollar then $100 spend earns you (100/190) = $0.52 Airpoints Dollars or $0.95 cash-equivalent

Key Features

  • Purchase Rate: 16.95%
  • Cash Advance Rate: 22.95%
  • Balance Transfer: 5.95% for life of balance transferred

What we like about the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard

Reward Program

The Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard offers a decent Airpoints earn rate even though it is less than the Amex Airpoints Platinum credit card it is better than many other Airpoints credit cards out there.

Travel Benefits

One of the standout features of this card is the comprehensive travel insurance that comes with it. This includes coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. Additionally, the card offers access to exclusive airport lounges with a complimentary Priority Pass membership providing a more comfortable travel experience.

Airpoiints Advance

The 200 Airpoints™ Dollars Advance available to you if you’re a little short on what you need for a reward is a nice touch

Airpoiints Status Points

Aside from Airpoints, we like the fact that this card also allows you to earn Airpoints status points which means that you can earn enough points attain a Silver, Gold or Elite tier unlocking a lot of benefits from Air New Zealand and its partners.

What is not so great about the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard

High Annual Fee

The Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard comes with a high annual fee. For many users, the card only starts to justify its cost after spending $13,750 annually. This can be a significant drawback if your spending does not reach this threshold, but if you are frequent flyer then the benefits such as complimentary travel insurance and Priority Pass membership might make it worth it.

Lower Earn Rate

Although the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard offers a better earn rate that other Airpoints Credit Cards, it offers a lower earn rate than the American Express Airpoints Platinum Credit Card, and the lower earn rate after $15K spend appears to penalise customers who spend too much with a lower earn rate which is strange.

Comparing Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard with AMEX Airpoints Platinum

Earning Rates Comparison

When comparing the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard and the Amex Airpoints Platinum Credit Card, one of the key differences lies in their Airpoints Dollar earning rates. With the AMEX Airpoints Platinum, you earn 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $70 spent. In contrast, the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard offers 1 Airpoints Dollar for every $95 spent, up to a monthly cap of $15,000 then it goes down to 1 Airpoint for very $190 spent.

Fee Structures

The Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard Credit Card has a higher annual fee compared to the Amex Airpoints Platinum Card.

Is the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard Right for me?

Deciding if the Westpac Airpoints World MasterCard suits your needs depends on several factors. Consider your spending habits, travel frequency, and personal financial goals to make an informed choice.

Spending Habits

Evaluate your monthly and yearly spending. The card has a high annual fee, and you need to spend at least $13,750 annually to start covering this cost. If your spending is lower, you might not get the full value from this card.

Travel Frequency

This card offers travel benefits like overseas travel insurance. If you travel often, these perks can be valuable. However, if you rarely travel, these benefits might not justify the high annual fee.

Personal Financial Goals

Think about your financial goals. If earning Airpoints Dollars is a priority, compare this card with others like the AMEX Airpoints Platinum. The AMEX card offers higher earning rates and additional perks, which might align better with your goals.

In general, we recommend comparing all credit cards on our website to help you make an informed decision.
