Price comparison sites have been around for a while. In the early 2000s comparison engines such as Kelkoo, shopping.com and Price Runner emerged to become some of the most visited websites by online shoppers in the UK and US. These price comparison engines allowed merchants to submit their product feeds for inclusion but also scoured the internet for product information for inclusion into the comparison engine.
These comparison engines only began to emerge in NZ in the mid-2000s and many of the bigger comparison engines mentioned above are yet to enter the NZ market. The two biggest comparison engines in New Zealand at the moment include Price Spy and Shop Bot.
Vertical Comparison Sites
While price comparison engines are a great tool for shopping, these sites tend to be bloated and do not do a good job of comparing service related products such as finance and utility products which have become increasingly difficult over the years to decipher and compare.
In the mid-2000s, a new generation of vertical-specific comparison sites began to emerge that offered in-depth feature comparison and advice aimed not only at comparing prices but at educating and empowering users to make the right choice.
New Zealand Vertical Comparison Sites
Surprisingly vertical specific comparison sites, which have been a great tool in empowering consumers around the world, are very rare in New Zealand. This is despite Australia being awash with many vertical specific shopping comparison sites ranging from credit card comparison sites to savings accounts, phone, home loans and more. The same is also true for other smaller English speaking countries such as Canada and Ireland where many vertical comparison sites exist for day to day utilities and finance products including mortgages, bank accounts, credit cards, electricity and more.

We think it is time for this revolution in online shopping to come to New Zealand and we have taken on the challenge to build and maintain a range of New Zealand comparison sites which we will be rolling out over the coming months.
